Keep it Utah resident to Utah resident
Private, unlicensed firearm sales must be between residents of the same state. If your buyer lives out of state, the transfer has to run through a licensed dealer (FFL) in their state.
Never sell to a prohibited person
It is a federal crime to sell to someone you know or have reason to believe is prohibited — including felons, people under a domestic violence restraining order, or anyone dodging your questions. If anything feels wrong, walk away.
Mind the age limits
Handgun transfers generally require the buyer to be 21 or older; long guns 18 or older. Ask for ID and confirm the buyer's Utah address.
Use an FFL when in doubt
For roughly $25–$50, a local dealer will run the background check and paperwork. Cheap peace of mind for both sides, and a paper trail you'll be glad to have.
Meet smart
Meet during daylight in a public place — many Utah police departments and gun shops allow transfer meetups in their lobby or parking lot. Bring a friend, keep firearms unloaded and cased until inspection, and never hand over cash before inspecting.
Write it down
A simple bill of sale with names, addresses, date, make, model, and serial number protects you if that firearm ever surfaces later.
